An honorary degree or a degree honoris causa is an academic degree for which a university has waived the usual requirements, such as matriculation, residence, study and the passing of examinations. The degree is typically a doctorate and may be awarded to someone who has no prior connection with the academic institution. The degree is often conferred as a way of honoring a distinguished person's contributions to a specific field or to society in general or in exchange of a financial donation for the scholarship fund.
VCS Research, represented by Prof. Vince Sinining, is the authorized representative to accept nominations, applications, collect financial donations and payments of fees, evaluate and recommend highly qualified individuals for the award.
An honorary doctoral degree is often awarded in recognition of one's life experiences. It is denoted by the letters "h.c.", which is an abbreviation for "honoris causa" ( Latin for "for the sake of honor" ). This means that the degree is bestowed as an honor rather than through the completion of certain academic requirements.
Honorary doctorates are often awarded by prestigious universities such as Harvard or Oxford. They are often given to those who have either made contributions to a certain field, or more commonly as a "thank you" to those who have made large donations to the university. Some famous examples of Honorary Doctors are Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, notable scientists, world leaders, among others.
WCG honorary degrees are awarded depending on the qualification and achievements of the nominee or applicant and a financial donation to the WCG Scholarship Fund plus a small administrative fee.
Honorary Doctorate or honoris causa PhD
Nowadays the attribution of an honorary title such as doctor honoris causa can mean :
- recognizing and distinguishing an outstanding person who contributed notably to his or her field of expertise
- rewarding or encouraging past or future donations to the University
Most regulations insist on the moral qualities of the honorary doctorate recipient. Another significant criterion for the nomination of a doctor honoris causa is the recognition by his or her peers.
Honorary distinctions can be of varied levels, the most appreciated one being, of course, that of honorary doctor (doctor honoris causa). In agreement with the rules, Winchester City University concedes an honorary doctorate (doctor honoris causa) according to the following essential criteria:
- the personal merit of the nominee
- the recognition by his peers
- donation to the scholarship fund (minimum amount is granted through our authorized representatives)
The rank of Doctor is recognized in the same way whether it has been obtained on a purely honorary basis or otherwise: it is designated by simply writing Dr. before the name, just as at one time a postgraduate doctorate.
